New Bengali dictionary in the works

The venerable Bangla Academy celebrated turned 60 in December and, having celebrated its diamond jubilee, there are plans afoot for a brand new Bengali dictionary.

As director general Samsuzzaman Khan told Bangladesh’s Daily Star newspaper:

At this moment, we are working on a modern dictionary. Because of technological revolution, many words have now become a part of our language; we use them in our day-to-day life. In this new dictionary, a lot of new words will be included.

So far, Bangla dictionaries were more like the thesaurus. In this new dictionary, there will be explanation of every word, as can be seen in English or other dictionaries.

There’s no word on whether this new dictionary (অভিধান) will come in a Bengali-English format too, but Khan’s words could be applied to Samsad’s Bengali-English Dictionary (pictured above alongside this morning’s coffee), which is often rather descriptive in its approach.

If you are looking for a Bengali-English dictionary, my current favourite is the Practical Bengali Dictionary by Hanne-Ruth Thompson.
