Channel 4 has unveiled details of its first Indian film season for 2017 and this time around it’s all about the region’s music.

The season kicks off with Tuning 2 You, a six-part look at Indian folk music, and that’s followed by films on Ravi Shankar, Zakir Hussain and a collaboration between Wynton Marsalis and a group Pakistani musicians.

Part funded via Kickstarter, Tuning 2 You sees virtuoso sarod player Soumik Datta and his brother Souvid, an award-winning photojournalist, visit six Indian states to investigate and celebrate the country’s rich folk music heritage.

It opens in West Bengal with a look at the deeply spiritual travelling minstrels known as Bauls and this is followed by films on the folk music of Rajasthan, Nagaland, Goa, Karnataka and Varanasi.

After this Channel 4 will screen the 1971 picture Raga: A Film Journey to the Soul of India, which follows sitar master Ravi Shankar during the late 1960s. It follows his return to India to revisit his guru, the Bengali multi-instrumentalist and composer Allauddin Khan, and explores Shankar’s life as a musician and teacher in the US and Europe.

Then there’s The Speaking Hand: Zakir Hussain and the Art of the Indian Drum – Sumantra Ghosal’s 2003 documentary charts the growth of this living legend through a series of concerts and interviews.

The season concludes with Song of Lahore, a 2015 film about the triumphant return to performing by a group of ageing musicians who were invited by jazz legend Wynton Marsalis to perform with his band at New York’s Lincoln Center.
