Q&A: Dr Hanne-Ruth Thompson

Dr Hanne-Ruth ThompsonDr Hanne-Ruth Thompson is a Lector in Bengali at the University of London’s School of Oriental and African Studies, where she teaches courses in Advanced Bengali and Modern Bengali Texts.

Her first book, Essential Everyday Bengali,  focused on the colloquial, everyday form of the language. This year a further three books are due out, including Bengali: A Comprehensive Grammar.

Here she explains how she came to take up Bengali, why traditional interpretations of its grammar have “fossilised” and why there are no insurmountable problems for students wanting to learn the language. Continue reading
