Bengali films on TV are even rarer than posts on this blog in recent months.

So it’s nice to see Film 4 giving Satyaji Ray’s 1956 film Aparajito (অপরাজিত) an outing tonight/tomorrow morning.

Film 4 to repeat In Custody

Later this week Film 4 will again show In Custody, the 1993 film that marked the directorial debut of Ismail Merchant (as in Merchant-Ivory).

As the UK digital channel last showed the film in September last year and then again in January, this provides the perfect opportunity to re-re-run my earlier posts.

In Custody is based on Anita Desai’s poignant tale about a poet past his best and stars Shashi Kapoor and Om Puri.

Satyajit Ray’s Pather Panchali returns to Film 4

Satyajit Ray's Pather PanchaliIf there’s one Bengali film you should see then Satyajit Ray’s 1955 directorial debut Pather Panchali (The Song of the Little Road) is it.

The film is the first in a trilogy of Aparajito (The Unvanquished) and Apur Sansar (The World of Apu).

It is a charming, bitter-sweet tale of a rural family struggling to making a living and is based on a novel by the Bengali writer Bibhuti Bhushan Bandopadyay. Continue reading
